The other water line

The supply hoses bring water in at pressure. The drain hose sends dirty water out in surges when the pump runs, and it empties into a standpipe, a laundry sink or a floor drain. If the hose is not fixed in place, the force of the pump can push it out of the pipe. If the standpipe is partly blocked by lint, the surge backs up and overflows the top.

Houses in the area range from older bungalows with basement standpipes to newer two-stories with a recessed wall box upstairs. Wall boxes hide the connection, so overflows there often show up on the ceiling below before anyone sees water.

Check your setup

  1. Pull the machine out a few inches

Look at where the drain hose enters the pipe.

  2. Check the hose loop

A high loop at the back of the washer helps prevent siphoning; see the manual.

  3. Run a drain test

Fill a bucket and pour it into the standpipe to see whether it drains quickly.

  4. Look inside the wall box

If there is one, look for stains or crust around the opening.

After an overflow

Washer drain water is gray water carrying soap and lint. Surface cleaning and drying matter, and a contractor may ask whether affected porous materials like carpet pad can be kept. Ask about disinfection of the area, and keep the lines under the laundry room in mind, because a standpipe backup can overflow where the pipe runs through a wall.

A final tip is to watch one full drain cycle on purpose, standing nearby, after any change to the washer or its connections. Many overflow problems show up only at the peak of the pump surge, and watching it once tells you more than any manual.
