More connections than most appliances
A water softener sits in the supply line, so it has an inlet and outlet connection, a bypass valve, a control head, a drain hose that carries rinse water, and a brine tank that holds salt and water. In homes that choose to soften their water, the unit often lives in a basement corner, a garage, or a utility closet. Because it regenerates on a schedule, water may move through the drain hose overnight, when nobody is watching.
A leak can be steady, like a weeping fitting, or occasional, like a drain hose that jumps out of its standpipe during regeneration. Brine tank overflows are a separate failure: a float or control problem lets the tank fill past its limit.
Failure points
| Point | What goes wrong | Hint |
|---|---|---|
| Inlet and outlet fittings | Loose or aged connectors seep | Drip when the water is on, any time of day |
| Bypass valve | Seals wear and leak at the stem | Wetness near the head of the unit |
| Control head | Cracked body or seal | Water around the top, sometimes stains |
| Drain hose | Slips from the drain, kinks, or is too long | Water on the floor after regeneration |
| Brine tank | Overfill, cracked shell, or blocked overflow | Tank water level too high, salty residue |

A monthly look
- Look at fittings and bypass for beads or white crust
- Check that the drain hose is secure and has an air gap where required by the manufacturer
- Look at the brine tank water level
- Check the floor beneath for salty stains
- Note whether regeneration time is at night and what is near the drain
Who deals with it
A plumber or the softener's service provider can repair the unit and its connections. For water that reached finished flooring, drywall or stored belongings, the questions are the same as for other appliance leaks: how far it spread, how long it sat, and how it will be dried. Brine water leaves residue, so ask whether surfaces will be rinsed as part of cleanup. Insurance may treat a sudden failure differently from a long-term seep, so keep the dates of repairs and any photographs.
Keep the softener's manual with your other records and note the regeneration schedule, so you know when water moves through the drain line.
