Why dates matter

Most appliance leaks start at parts that wear out over time. Few people remember when the washer hoses were last changed, and fewer know the age of the water heater. A log makes the unknown visible. It also helps if you ever need to explain the history of a failed part to an insurer or a plumber.

Finding the dates

  1. Is there a sticker or stamp on the hose collar?
  2. Does the appliance receipt or install paperwork list the date?
  3. Can the water heater serial number be decoded using the maker's website?
  4. Did a plumber or installer note the date on an invoice?
  5. If the date is unknown, can you label the part today and start counting?

Words on the log

Braided hose
A supply hose with a metal mesh cover over a rubber or plastic liner.
Coupling
The nut at the end of a hose that threads onto a valve or appliance.
Nameplate
The label on an appliance listing model, serial number and ratings.
Replacement interval
How often a maker suggests changing a part; see the manual.

A yearly rhythm

Early in the year
Check dates on hoses and lines; update the log.
Before heating season
Look at the humidifier line and the water heater base.
Before cooling season
Check the condensate drain and the pan.
After any repair
Record what changed and when.

Where to keep it

Tape a copy inside a cabinet door or in a folder with the manuals. Add the page to your leak claim file so it travels with other records.

If the log shows several items due in the same season, spread the work out: replace the washer hoses first because they are inexpensive and sit at full pressure, then schedule the heater evaluation. A calendar entry for each due date turns the log into action. It is better to replace a hose a little early than to replace a floor late, and the log makes that trade-off visible without requiring anyone to remember the dates.
