How to use this form
Walk through the house with a pencil and a flashlight and fill in one row per appliance. Test each valve by turning it gently closed and open again, if it moves easily. Do not force a stiff valve; note it instead and ask a plumber. Write down positions in plain language, such as behind the washer on the left wall, so a babysitter or a neighbor could find it.

Before you file it away
- Every valve was reached without moving heavy furniture
- Stiff valves were noted for a plumber
- Main shutoff has a tag or label
- A wrench or valve key is stored nearby if one is needed
- Everyone in the home has seen the map
- A copy is on a phone and a copy is on paper
If a valve will not behave
- IfA valve will not turnDo not force it. Note it, and use the next valve upstream; ask a plumber about replacing it.
- IfA valve turns but the water keeps flowingIt may not be sealing. Go to the next valve closer to the main.
- IfA valve drips at the stem when movedTighten the packing nut slightly if you know how, or ask a plumber.
- IfYou cannot find a shutoff for an applianceTreat the main as its shutoff and ask a plumber about adding a local one.
Updating the map
Re-check the map after any appliance replacement or remodel. New appliances may use different connections, and old valves may have been removed. Pair it with a hose and tank age log so the same walk-through covers both.
Plan the map around the person least familiar with the house. A visiting relative, a house sitter or a neighbor with a spare key should be able to read a row and walk straight to the handle. Describe landmarks, such as the third cabinet to the right of the sink or the shelf above the dryer, rather than compass directions. If a valve sits behind a stored item, move the item and note that the path must stay clear. Finish by reading the page aloud to someone who has never seen the utility room and watch whether they can find each valve.
